How do I make canvas fabric smooth?
So I'm making a tote bag. I'm using a regular canvas tote bag and using regular acrylic paints. I want to make it smooth to the touch, and not that scratchy feel you get from paint. Any ideas?
You will need to add a "medium" to the paint, that is a liquid that will allow the paint to flow better without diluting the color or making it transparent. These mediums are available at craft and art supply stores. You'll need to look at the little bottles and tubes next to the paint displays. Also liquid acrylic rather than the thicker paint in jars or the thick paint in tubes is naturally smoother and applies with no brush marks. There's fabric mediums that allow you to use any acrylic paint on fabric, glaze mediums that smooth out flow without adding transparency, ones that make acrylic like watercolours, one that allow you to add impasto effects -which is the opposite of what you want -but it is available.
